Committed to the principle that an informed Mason is a better Mason, the Illinois Lodge of Research encourages members to study subjects connected with the Craft and offers opportunities to share research with other lodge members and our brethren in general.

General Guidelines for Research
Papers and Presentations

We’ve just published our 2016-2017 Annual Transactions at our Annual Meeting in October. Didn’t get yours? Send an email to us by clicking here and we’ll see that you get yours as a member benefit. The 2017-2018 Call for Submissions and Submission Guidelines will be released in early 2018, but you can start your research now! The deadline for submissions for the 2017-2018 Annual Transactions is July 31, 2018. These quick, general guidelines will also get you started.

  1. Submission of the subject with a brief statement to the Illinois Lodge of Research is recommended before devoting a great deal of time to the topic.
  2. Subjects deemed not suitable would be the same not permitted at a Masonic meeting.
  3. Ritualistic subjects must be cleared with the Board of Grand Examiners by the author.
  4. Questions relating to Masonic Law must be cleared with the Grand Master by the author.
  5. The promotion of personal theories or projects is forbidden.
  6. Papers favoring or opposing pending or proposed legislation are not appropriate.
  7. The length of a paper shall have a relationship to the interest in the subject matter by the general membership, or its timeliness.
  8. Papers need to be submitted on 8-1/2 X 11 typed, double-spaced paper to Hilton Kaufman, 2713 W. Jarvis Ave., Chicago, IL 60645. A bibliography must be included. A copy of the article via email or other electronic means is appreciated. This may be done in lieu of the typed copy.
  9. There are certain areas that should be avoided as not worthy of our attention. A partial list includes occult and mystic subjects; attempts to link the Craft with other groups; theories on the origins of the Craft; and representing historical events as Masonic projects.
  10. Some areas that lend themselves to papers of general interest are aspects of Illinois Masonic history; symbolism; biographical sketches; philosophy; lodge administration; leadership; music; literature; Masonic Words; jurisprudence; the nature of the Craft; current events; patriotic items; etc.
  11. All authors submitting material agree to allow the Illinois Lodge of Research unlimited use of their copyright on the material.
